How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax

There’s something magical about cold beverages by the pool on a hot day. We’ve gone full-fledged summer and we’re hoping you have, too! With the swimming season in the works, keeping your body comfortable is the most important thing you can do for yourself. If you’re prepping for your first Brazilian wax, we’re glad you’re here, and we’ve got your back with everything you need to know.

What is a Brazilian wax?

If you’re new to the waxing world, you may be curious about the ins and outs of every waxing style, and with Brazilians being one of the most popular, we can give you the information you need to make an informed decision about what’s best for you.

The Brazilian is a classic waxing style that’s been on everyone’s wishlist forever and the sheer convenience of not having to keep up with pubic hair grooming is invaluable.

What’s included in a Brazilian wax?

There aren’t any frills with Brazilian waxes. Brazilian’s focus on the hair removal of the entire pubic area, the bikini line, genital area, and butt strip. If you’re a fan of the hair-free feeling after a total shave, you just might find yourself becoming a regular at the studio.

Brazilian vs Bikini waxing

We know, there’s a lot to consider in the waxing world, but it doesn’t have to be as complex as it may sound. If you’re someone who’s more worried about pubic hair on your bikini line but has no preference for the rest, a bikini wax might be right up your alley. Whether you’re going for a landing strip or a super smooth bikini area, you can get your needs met.

A bikini wax focuses on removing all hair outside of the area your bikini covers, and the “bikini” area may look different on different bodies. Generally, it's the space between your upper thigh and vagina.

Getting ready for your first Brazilian wax

A Brazilian wax may sound intimidating to most people, especially without having the proper knowledge about the process from start to finish. There are a few key things you need to keep in mind prior to your appointment to ensure that you have a successful session.

Grow your hair out

Whether it’s a beach trip, a first date or you’re simply a fan of the smooth feeling from the absence of pubic hair, a Brazilian wax can help you feel more like yourself, and it comes with a slew of benefits, too!

Being aware of your hair growth cycle and growing your pubic hair out between appointments is the key to getting the most out of your appointments and in between sessions. Growing your hair out to a quarter inch before coming in (roughly 2 weeks of growth, depending on the person) sets you up for success.

Exfoliate at the right time before your appointment

Since waxing can be a little tough on your skin, exfoliating to knock out that dead skin just before your appointment is a no-go. While gentle exfoliating a day or two before your appointment can actually help knock ingrown hair follicles loose, exfoliating right before your appointment can leave your skin feeling raw and more susceptible to irritation.

Wear loose fitting clothing

Everything has a dress code, and while it’s sometimes fun to challenge the rules, loose-fitting clothing is your best friend. Give your body the space it needs to breathe after your appointment by wearing sweats or a gentle, cotton, loose-fit out. We love a leggings day, but the spandex element can create the perfect environment for a rash and other forms of annoying irritation.

Take a painkiller

If you’re worried about the way your skin may feel during a waxing, you can take ibuprofen prior to your appointment. Between hydration, proper preparation, and aftercare, your body should have everything it needs to heal perfectly.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol

While we’re on the topic of hydration, be mindful of your caffeine and alcohol intake prior to your appointment. Stimulants in our bodies make our skin far more susceptible to highly sensitive skin. Save the painting and wine for after your appointment.

Relax, and talk to your esthetician as needed

The most important thing to remember during your appointment is that your esthetician has your best interest at heart. The more information you give them about your needs, the better your waxing experience will be.
